Pretoria Secondary School

Pretoria Secondary School, located in Pretoria, South Africa, was founded in 2003, without desks or chairs, but with a competent and dedicated staff. Principal Saul Mangengenene, since arriving in 2007, has consolidated the school from trailers scattered across three campuses across the city to one building. School staff, through their consistent encouragement and emphasis on academic and extracurricular success, has empowered students to succeed in many of their endeavors. The school offers students opportunities to participate in soccer, chess, tennis, rugby, cross country running, debate, math and science olympiads, and a Book Club. Although the PSS’s indigenous African and immigrant student population hails from poor backgrounds and the school lacks a soccer field, the boys team was the champion of the city soccer league and a PSS student won the opera section of the local music competition. However, due to a lack of books, students score poorly on national exams and Principal Mangengenene is unable to promote reading for pleasure, which increases both test scores and student engagement. Brighter World Books hopes to fill PSS’s empty library with books to aid Mr. Mangengenene and the school’s teachers in promoting high academic achievement for all students.
